Hiking the Alps

When Sean and Gilly arrived, our friends from the states, they provided us with a few "wish list" items they hoped to enjoy during their visit. One of those items just to happened to be hiking the Alps.  OK....how about Switzerland?  We know just the place......  If you recall that in late June we capped off our week in Switzerland by venturing over to the cool village of Grindelwald to take in a day of hiking around the Alps.  Our visit with less than perfect unfortunately.....between the clouds and rain and Andrea fighting off the illness of the year, we hoped for a redemption visit in the near future that involved a longer stay, perfect warm weather, and no illnesses.  We held our fingers crossed that this trifecta would be achieved during our trip with Sean and Gilly.

Driving down to Switzerland the weather turned out to be perfect......it looked as if the great weather wish was to be granted for our stay in Grindelwald.  Arriving in Grindelwald on the first day we were immediately faced with a tough decision: out of the several trails surrounding Grindelwald, which hike should we enjoy?  We decided to venture up to First and wander over to the high alpine lake of Bachalpsee.  The views, as you will see, were more than rewarding.

A great photo op on the way to the lake

Totally random tree that held a sign announcing the arrival to the mid-mountain snackhouse Adis Skibar

More incredible views

The lodge at First.  Notice the pattern in the rocks...amazing.

Remember our wish to enjoy a longer stay on our next visit?  Wish granted.  Not only that, but the view from our room was terrific.  This picture is from our first night sitting out on the deck looking out on the village of Grindelwald and enjoying the sunset.  Absolutely perfect.

Our first day was a complete success: perfect hike, terrific weather, amazing views, and nobody became ill.  And with great friends!  How can you top that?!?  Well, we had one more day to enjoy the Alps and that meant another tough decision: out of the several hikes in and around the area, which one should we try out?  I am happy to say that thanks to the relaxation enjoyed while taking in the view from the deck, we came to a decision....and one that we would not regret.  We would head to Jungfrau: the Top of Europe.
